🎯 2026–2027 Youth & Teen Centers in the Merrimack Valley

Places for Tweens & Teens to Hang Out, Make Friends & Try Something New

Do you have a tween or teenager who seems permanently attached to their phone, computer, or gaming system? Sometimes what they really need is somewhere to go! Fortunately, the Merrimack Valley has more options for older kids than you might realize.

I updated our guide for the 2026–2027 school year, and there are several additions worth knowing about — including the brand-new Methuen Youth & Community Center, plus established teen programs in Haverhill and Lawrence that deserve a spot on the list.

Whether your child is looking for sports, art, gaming, homework help, leadership opportunities, or simply a safe place to hang out with other kids, start here.

Last updated: September 8, 2026. Programs, eligibility, fees and hours can change, so always check directly with the organization before visiting.

📍 ANDOVER

🎮 Cormier Youth Center — Andover Youth Services

4.3•Youth center•Closed•

40 Whittier Court, Andover

The Cormier Youth Center is the home of Andover Youth Services and is a great resource for Andover tweens and teens. The center combines recreation and social space with organized programs, leadership opportunities and community service.

Kids can find opportunities involving:

  • 🎨 Art and creativity
  • 🍳 Cooking
  • 🏀 Sports and recreation
  • 🎮 Social and drop-in activities
  • 🚌 Trips and special events
  • ❤️ Community service
  • 🌟 Leadership development

This is a particularly good option for kids who aren't necessarily interested in joining another sports team but still want a place to meet people and get involved.

📍 NORTH ANDOVER

🏀 North Andover Youth Services Department — Joseph N. Hermann Youth Center

4.2•Youth center•Closed••

33 Johnson Street, North Andover

The Joseph N. Hermann Youth Center continues to be one of the area's most comprehensive municipal youth centers.

Many members walk over from North Andover Middle School after school, making it a true after-school gathering place rather than simply a location for scheduled classes.

The center offers recreation and youth-development opportunities along with facilities that include indoor and outdoor activity spaces. Membership and residency requirements apply to some programs.

This is one to check out if your middle schooler says, "I don't want to take a class. I just want somewhere to hang out."

📍 METHUEN

⭐ NEW! Methuen Youth & Community Center

10 Ditson Place, Methuen

This is the biggest addition to our updated guide!

The Methuen Youth & Community Center (MYCC) officially opens its doors with a ribbon cutting on September 26, 2026. The new center is being created as a place where young people can create, learn, lead, play and belong, regardless of their family's ability to pay.

The center is focused primarily on students in grades 6–12 and plans opportunities involving academics, mentoring, enrichment, leadership, career exploration and recreation.

Even better: youth programming is intended to be free to families.

Methuen Youth & Community Center

🏀 Methuen YMCA

4.0•Youth organization•Closed••

129 Haverhill Street, Methuen

Don't forget about the Methuen YMCA! This branch is particularly focused on youth and child programming and has a basketball gym and program space. The Merrimack Valley YMCA also offers dedicated teen programming across its organization.

📍 HAVERHILL

⭐ Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill

4.4•Youth organization•Closed••

55 Emerson Street, Haverhill

This absolutely belongs on our updated list.

The Boys & Girls Club has a dedicated Teen Program for ages 13–18, and after-school hours run until 7 PM. Teens aren't just hanging around — they can participate in sports, volunteering, leadership activities, college visits and the Club's teen-led Keystone Club and store.

It's a strong choice for teens who want both social time and opportunities to take on more responsibility.

📚 Discovery Club / Access 21

Haverhill Public Schools also has an important option for eligible students. Discovery Club/Access 21 provides before- and after-school academic and social support plus enrichment.

For 2026–27, programming has been approved at several schools, including Consentino Middle School, Nettle Middle School and Haverhill High School, with programs beginning September 14. Eligibility requirements apply.

🌟 Youth Empowerhouse, Corp.

5.0•Non-profit organization••

7 William Street, Haverhill

Youth EmpowerHouse is another Haverhill option families may not know about. The nonprofit provides out-of-school programming for children and teens, combining academic support, enrichment, recreation, life skills and leadership opportunities.

📍 LAWRENCE

Lawrence has several youth organizations, so I've expanded this section considerably.

⭐ Lawrence Boys & Girls Club

4.6•Youth organization•Closed••

136 Water Street, Lawrence

The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence provides a true youth-center environment with recreation, academics and teen programming.

Its programs focus on three big areas: academic success, healthy lifestyles, and character and leadership development. Older students can also receive help planning for college, vocational education, the military or employment.

There are leadership opportunities for teens through programs such as Keystone Club and for younger teens through Torch Club.

🎨 Movement City Youth Center

5.0•Youth center••

168 Newbury Street, Lawrence

Here's another one worth adding to your radar.

Movement City provides an arts-focused youth-development environment, giving young people opportunities to explore creativity while developing skills and confidence.

It also offers A.L.A.S., a paid youth leadership-development program.

This could be an especially good fit for a teen who isn't interested in traditional sports but loves art, creativity and self-expression.

🎓 YDO — Youth Development Organization

4.6•After school program•Closed••

15 Union Street, Lawrence

YDO offers out-of-school enrichment and long-term youth development. Programs include academic and enrichment opportunities, music and youth leadership.

For older students, YDO also provides postsecondary advising in partnership with Lawrence Public Schools, helping high school students think about what comes next.

🏀 Lawrence YMCA

1.0Yelp•Community health center•Open••

40 Lawrence Street, Lawrence

The Lawrence YMCA offers youth and teen opportunities along with a gym, pool, computer lab and teen space. The broader Merrimack Valley YMCA specifically lists Teen Programs — "Spaces where teens grow, lead, belong" among its youth and family offerings.

🌟 Family & Community Resource Center

430 North Canal Street, Lawrence

This isn't a traditional drop-in teen center, but it can be an excellent resource for Merrimack Valley families.

Programs include teen peer groups, youth life-skills workshops, bullying-prevention and financial-literacy programs, recreation and community-service opportunities. Services are free and available to families throughout Essex County.

Family & Community Resource Center

📍 GEORGETOWN & GROVELAND

We still couldn't verify a dedicated year-round drop-in teen center in Georgetown or Groveland.

For local tweens and teens, it's worth checking programs through the libraries, recreation departments, schools, sports organizations and other community groups.

Families looking for a true teen-center experience may want to explore nearby options in Haverhill, North Andover, Andover or Methuen.

📍 BOXFORD & MIDDLETON

Boxford and Middleton also don't currently have a municipal drop-in youth center comparable to North Andover's.

📚 Boxford Town Library

The Boxford Town Library specifically serves children and teens and offers special programs throughout the year, including school-vacation activities and summer programming.

🌲 Boxford Park Program

During the summer, Boxford's Park Program includes a Counselor-in-Training program for students entering grades 7 and 8, giving older kids an opportunity to begin developing leadership skills.

Boxford, Middleton and Topsfield families should also watch Tri-Town organizations for seasonal youth and enrichment opportunities.

🏊 YMCA OPTIONS AROUND THE MERRIMACK VALLEY

The Merrimack Valley YMCA deserves a broader mention because it provides youth programming at multiple locations.

Andover/North Andover YMCA, Lawrence YMCA and Methuen YMCA offer various youth opportunities.

The Y's youth programming includes sports, swimming, enrichment, after-school programs and dedicated teen opportunities. Its after-school programming serves ages 5–14 and incorporates homework support, arts, science and technology, service learning, wellness and social-development activities.

🌟 Finding the Right Place for Your Tween or Teen

Not every kid wants the same thing — and that's actually one of the best things about the growing number of options in the Merrimack Valley.

A child who wants a casual after-school hangout might love a municipal youth center. A sports-loving kid may gravitate toward the YMCA or Boys & Girls Club. A creative teen might feel at home at Movement City. And a student interested in leadership, volunteering or preparing for life after high school may prefer one of the more structured youth-development programs.

The biggest advice? Let your tween or teen help choose. A program is much more likely to get them off the computer if it's somewhere they actually want to go.

💛 More Than Just Something To Do

Youth and teen centers aren't simply places to fill the hours between school and dinner. They give kids opportunities to meet new people, build friendships, discover interests, find trusted adults, gain independence and feel connected to their community.

And with the new Methuen Youth & Community Center opening this September, plus established centers and teen programs in Andover, North Andover, Haverhill and Lawrence, Merrimack Valley families have more choices to explore in 2026–27 than ever.
